AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A 70-year-old man was sent to the hospital after a SWAT standoff in Augusta early Friday morning.

Deputies with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home on the 300 block of Indian Trail Court around 1 a.m. for a domestic situation.

According to the sheriff’s office, a woman told deputies her 70-year-old husband was inside the home with a firearm.

Deputies say the man was experiencing a mental health crisis and was hallucinating.

The sheriff’s office says deputies attempted to enter the home, but quickly exited after two shots were fired inside the home.

Around 1:43 a.m., the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Response Organization (ERO), including SWAT, Crisis Negotiators and Tactical Operations Center personnel, responded to the home.

According to officials, negotiations with the man were unsuccessful.

Deputies say a specialized entry team was formed at 2:15 a.m., and at 2:50 a.m., SWAT entered the home.

Central EMS and the Richmond County Fire Department were on scene to provide medical evaluation for the man, who was later transported for further care, according to deputies.

Deputies say nearby neighbors were evacuated from their homes during the incident, but they have since returned.

The scene was cleared around 3:30 a.m.

There were no injuries reported in this incident.
